A private driver stays with you for the whole trip, whether that is a single transfer between two cities or a two-week circuit. You decide the route and the pace; the driver takes care of the road, parking, fuel and timing. It is different from a licensed city guide: inside the medinas of Fes or Marrakech, where cars cannot enter, a local guide can be arranged separately for the walking visit.
Distances in Morocco are longer than they look on a map, especially across the mountains. As a guide: Casablanca to Marrakech takes about two and a half hours by motorway, Casablanca to Rabat about one hour, Marrakech to Essaouira two and a half to three hours, Marrakech to Fes five and a half to six hours by motorway, Fes to Chefchaouen three and a half to four hours, and Tangier to Chefchaouen around two hours. Marrakech to Merzouga is about nine to ten hours of driving and is normally split over two days.
Trains link Tangier, Rabat, Casablanca, Fes and Marrakech well, but they do not reach Chefchaouen, Essaouira, the Atlas valleys or the Sahara. A rental car gives freedom, but mountain passes such as Tizi n Tichka, night driving on rural roads and parking near the medinas are tiring for a first visit. A private driver costs more than a bus ticket and removes all of that: door-to-door pick-up, stops wherever you want a photo or a coffee, and someone who knows the road conditions that day.
