Which length suits you?

  • 5 days: northern Morocco — Rabat, Chefchaouen and Fes.
  • 7 to 9 days: imperial cities plus one night in the Sahara.
  • 10 days and more: the full loop with time to rest in each city.

Why start a Morocco tour in Casablanca?

Mohammed V Airport in Casablanca is the largest international gateway in Morocco, so many long-haul flights land here rather than in Marrakech or Fes. Starting the tour at the airport or at a Casablanca hotel avoids an internal transfer and lets the route run as a loop or a one-way line through the country.

The city itself needs only a few hours. The Hassan II Mosque, built partly over the Atlantic, is one of the few mosques in Morocco open to non-Muslim visitors on guided tours, and the Corniche and the Habous quarter fill the rest of a first afternoon.

A classic route from Casablanca

Most itineraries head north first: Rabat, the capital, is about one hour away, and the blue town of Chefchaouen in the Rif mountains around four and a half hours. From there the road turns south to Fes, with the Roman ruins of Volubilis and the imperial city of Meknes on the way. After Fes the route crosses the Middle Atlas to the Sahara dunes at Merzouga, then follows the Todra and Dades gorges to Ouarzazate and Ait Benhaddou before crossing the High Atlas to Marrakech. Casablanca is about two and a half hours from Marrakech by motorway, which closes the loop.

How many days do you need?

Seven to eight days cover the imperial cities and one night in the desert at a fast pace. Nine to ten days is the comfortable length: two nights in Fes and Marrakech, time in Chefchaouen, and no day with more than about six hours of driving. With twelve days or more you can add Essaouira on the Atlantic coast, a second night in the Sahara or a day walking in the Atlas Mountains.

If your flight home leaves from Marrakech, the tour can end there instead of returning to Casablanca.

When to travel

Spring, from March to May, and autumn, from September to November, have the best balance between the cities and the desert. Summer is hot inland but pleasant on the coast and in the mountains. Winter is mild in Marrakech, cold at night in the Sahara and can bring snow to the Atlas passes. During Ramadan the tours run normally, with shorter opening hours at some monuments and restaurants during the day.
