Marrakech is a good base because very different landscapes are within a short drive. The Agafay stone desert is about 45 minutes away. The Ourika Valley is around one hour, and Imlil, the trailhead village for Mount Toubkal, about an hour and a half. The Ouzoud waterfalls and the Atlantic town of Essaouira are each roughly two and a half to three hours away. Ait Benhaddou and Ouarzazate, on the other side of the Tizi n Tichka pass, take around three and a half to four hours each way and make a long but rewarding day.
For mountains and Berber villages without a long drive, choose the Ourika Valley or Imlil in the High Atlas. For the sea, fresh fish and a relaxed medina, choose Essaouira. For waterfalls and a swim in summer, Ouzoud. For a desert feeling without the two-day journey to the Sahara, Agafay offers camel rides, quad biking and dinner under the stars close to the city. For kasbahs and film locations, Ait Benhaddou.
Families with young children usually prefer the shorter drives. Travellers with only one free day often pick Essaouira or the Atlas, while those with two or more free days should consider a real Sahara tour instead of a long day on the road.
Not every outing needs a full day. Hot air balloon flights take off at sunrise and have you back in the city before lunch. Quad biking and camel rides in the Palmeraie take about half a day, and paragliding is possible above Lake Lalla Takerkoust and the Agafay hills. These combine well with an afternoon in the medina or the Majorelle Garden.
Most day trips leave between 8:00 and 9:00 with pick-up from your riad or hotel; if your riad is inside the medina, the driver meets you at the nearest gate that cars can reach. In the Atlas, bring walking shoes and an extra layer, since the valleys are cooler than Marrakech, and snow is possible on the passes in winter. On Fridays some village souks and shops close around midday prayer. Weekly markets, such as the Monday souk in the Ourika Valley, are worth planning around if you want to see local life.
