The Agafay Desert is a stony desert of rolling hills about 40 km southwest of Marrakech, a 45-minute drive from the city, with the High Atlas mountains as a backdrop. It is the easiest desert experience from Marrakech: quad biking, sunset camel rides, dinner shows under the stars and pool days, in half a day or an evening.

Agafay is not a sand desert like the Sahara. It is a "hamada", a stony desert of beige and pink hills, dry riverbeds and almost no trees, on a plateau between Marrakech and the Lalla Takerkoust lake. From the viewpoints you see the peaks of the High Atlas, covered in snow from about November to April.
Because it is only 40 km from Marrakech, you get a real desert landscape without the long drive to Merzouga or Zagora: leave after lunch, watch the sunset, have dinner under the stars and sleep in your riad the same night.
Quad biking is the most popular activity in Agafay. After a safety briefing you ride behind a guide on desert tracks, with stops at viewpoints and a mint tea break in a Berber tent. Choose 1 hour for a first try or 2 hours for a longer loop. A buggy is the comfortable alternative: two seats side by side, a roll cage and a seat belt. The classic Agafay evening starts with a camel ride in the golden hour and ends at a desert camp. The dinner show includes Moroccan salads, a tagine or couscous, mint tea, live Berber and Gnawa music, a fire show and a campfire. It is the most romantic way to see the desert from Marrakech and it works well for families too.
Several Agafay camps open their pools to day guests. Our day pass includes the return transfer and a Moroccan lunch, and you can add a quad or camel ride. Pools are unheated, so this is best from April to October.
Choose Agafay if you have one free afternoon or evening, travel with young children or do not want long hours in the car. Agafay is good all year. From October to April days are mild, the sun sets early (around 18:15 to 18:30 in December) and nights can drop to 5 °C, so bring a warm jacket. From June to September afternoons are very hot, so activities move to the morning or to sunset, which is around 20:40 in June.

Yes, if you want a desert experience without a long trip. In half a day you get a desert landscape, Atlas views, a camel or quad ride and a sunset. If you want high sand dunes, plan a 2 to 3 day Sahara tour instead.
Agafay is a stony desert (hamada) with hills and dry riverbeds rather than sand dunes. It is very dry with almost no vegetation, which is why it looks like the moon.
